Dr. Inayatullah - A Life Dedicated to Global Peace and Participatory Political Development
Dr. Inayatullah was born on June 3, 1931 in a small village of District Hafizabad. He did his Matriculation from M.B. High School Hafizabad and received a Master’s degree in Economics from Punjab University in 1956. Later he received his Master’s degree in Sociology from Michigan State University and Ph.D in Political Science from Indiana University, USA.
For fifteen years, Dr. Inayatullah worked as a researcher with several UN research institutions in New York, Geneva and Kuala Lumpur. He was an instructor at the Pakistan Academy for Rural Development in Peshawar and the founding Chair of the Department of International Relations, Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU), Islamabad. Since his retirement from UN in 1983 he initiated and worked with several academic and cultural forums and wrote a number of books and articles for professional journals. He had been engaged in several voluntary activities and was a founder member of a number of forums including the Society for International Development (SID), the Islamabad Cultural Forum and the Pakistan-India Peoples Forum for Peace and Democracy.
He worked assiduously for the promotion of social sciences in the universities. He helped the QAU Faculty of Social Sciences to organise the first national conference of social scientists in 1988 and together with other well known social scientists created the Islamabad Social Science Forum in 1990. During the 22 years of its existence the Forum has been meeting regularly on the last Friday of the month.
In collaboration with other social scientists, in 2000 he founded the Council of Social Sciences, Pakistan (COSS). He was its President until 2008 and Life Patron of the Council until his death. In 2004 he also established the Trust for Global Peace and acted as its Managing Trustee. He was also a member of Committee on Development of Social Sciences established by Higher Education Commission, Islamabad.
Recognising his service to the development of social sciences in Pakistan, Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) conferred on him `A Lifetime Achievement Award for the Development of Social Sciences in Pakistan' for his untiring efforts to promote quality research in social sciences.
Dr. Inayatullah was the author of a eight books. His most recent was State and Democracy in Pakistan published by Vanguard. From the platform of the Council of Social Sciences, Pakistan also edited a number of books, including Social Sciences in Pakistan: A Profile along with Rubina Saigol and Pervez Tahir. He also edited two books Associations of Social Scientists: An Analytical Study and Towards Understanding the State of Science in Pakistan. He has written and published extensively on different aspects of politics of Pakistan in national press and professional journals.
